ECCOSORB® FDS is a thin, flexible, magnetically loaded, silicone rubber material that is electrically non-conductive. This material has high magnetic and dielectric loss in the UHF and microwave bands. It is generally applied to attenuate surface currents and therefore can be used to modify antenna patterns, lower the Q of cavities, act as an attenuator in transmission lines, or reduce the radar cross section of objects.
ECCOSORB® FDS has been used to line the inside surface of metal cylinders which have one end open and found to reduce the “head on” radar cross section. It is not recommended as an absorber for specular reflections. It is effective where surface wave phenomena and multiple bounce contribute to RCS.
As a practical matter, ECCOSORB® FDS is not that commonly used in cavity resonance reduction applications, particularly in the 800 MHz to 6 GHz range. In those situations, ECCOSORB® MCS is highly recommended for best performance.
